Mothers' Day Races (Rio Grande River Festival)
The Oldest Whitewater Race in the Western US!
May 4-5 and 11-12, 2002
Pilar Racecourse on the Rio Grande
Pilar, New Mexico

Paddlers Hone Skills at MDR Clinic: The MDR, intermediate clinic was a huge success. Ten students turned out for the day long clinic taught by Russ Gregory, Richard Stoops and Tim Scofield. The day began at Quartzite with students working on fundamentals and stroke technique. As the day progressed, the group worked its way down river and began linking strokes and refining maneuvers.

Everyone progressed nicely as Richard and Tim coached each paddler through most of the gates, with emphasis on fluidity, grace and efficiency. Finally, most of us headed down to Ben's and Sleeping Beauty for some quality playtime.

An intermediate/advanced kayaking, and separate canoeing clinic are scheduled for early August with another try at the juniors clinic slated for late August (in conjunction with the annual picnic) please contact Russ for details at russk@zianet.com or 751-4282.

Marathon
Douglas Hughes with a time of 1:05:41.36

Wildwater
Douglas Hughes with a time of 42:30 (Plastic kayak)
Javier Torres-Hughes with a time of 45:30 (plastic Kayak)

(Editor’s note) Not bad for Douglas – he finished the Marathon with enough time to get to Quartize for the Wildwater race. Javier (yes – they are father/son) declined to race in the Marathon to save himself for the Wildwater contest!

(Editor’s note) Some boaters from Lubbock stopped by the slalom and decided it looked too hard to try – but then some challenging between them resulted in late entrants to the slalom. They did very well taking the 1st, 2nd and 6th place finishes in the intermediate class.

Thank you Pilar Yacht Club

The Pilar Yacht Club has donated their profits to AWC for the morning of May 12th. AWC appreciates this gesture, especially in a year when there is little activity on the river. So please – support PYC! Next time you’re at the river or going through the area, stop by, say hello and buy a burrito – they are big enough to keep you full the whole day!
