gcpba NEWSWIRE - Fourth Annual Online Auction Set To Begin 1 April 2004 - posted January 24, 2004

GRAND CANYON PRIVATE BOATERS ASSOCIATION (GCPBA) is a group dedicated to representing the interests of private boaters to the Park. GCPBA sued the park to restart the Colorado River Management Plan (CRMP) after the Park Service wanted to drop it due to lack of consensus. One of the main areas GCPBA is concerned with is river access. The Grand Canyon is the only river in the West with a waiting list. Before the Park closed the list, the wait was 23 years. Yet you can pay a commercial outfitter $2,500 and go down the Canyon this summer. We think there is some thing wrong when commercial interests have greater access to a National Park than citizens do. GCPBA is determined to bring the access into balance

Needless to say this takes money. Each year we hold a silent auction of river/camping gear. This year our auction will begin on the 1st of April. It will end on April 18th at midnight CST. The URL for the auction is: http://www.gcpba.org/auction/

Don't miss out!  The gcpba's fourth annual online auction is set to begin on 1 April 2004.  It will run through the 18th of April ending at midnight CST. Registration will begin on 1 March 2004.

Last years donations included the new Mini-Me raft donated by Hyside and a Leopard cataraft donated by Aire.   Other donations from last year included Sawyer oars, Chaco sandals, Chums, and other essential river gear. Donations are now being accepted for this year's auction.  There is also a need for people to help contact vendors to solicit donations.  To make a donation, or to help with the auction, contact Nancy Seamons at 801.368.4881 or e-mail Nancy.

Now that the lawsuit has been settled with the Grand Canyon National Park (GCNP) and the Colorado River Management Plan (CRMP) is in progress, the gcpba is gearing up for the future.  There is a lot of work to be done in working with the GCNP to help develop an access system favorable to the private boater in Grand Canyon.  These efforts will require a lot of monetary support in order to be successful.

The auction is just one way to keep funds coming in to help with the monetary demands.  Not only will you be helping us, and yourself, in our pursuit of fair access, but you will be getting quality merchandise as well.

The July 18th 2003 club meeting with Tom Martin on the  Colorado River Management Plan in Grand Canyon National Park was both informative on the canyon and canyon politics and showed some beautiful pictures in his slide show. For more information please check out River Runners for Wilderness web:

To find some beautiful scenery, while in the canyon refer to Tom's book: Day Hikes From The River: A guide to 100 hikes from camps on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park.
