Rio Grande River
Festival moved to June 28th
The races can only happen when everyone helps out. We need help with the following jobs: If you can help please e-mail flipline@comcast.net. Slalom Racer Coordinator This is a half a day job. Mostly you are rounding up the slalom racers, getting them and their boats organized and holding the racer’s meeting (telling them the rules, discuss safety issues). The rules are found on ACA’s (American Canoe Association) website, plus there are folks who’ve done this before and can help on this part. Slalom Radio Organizer this is a maybe a day and a half day job. We use handheld radios for judges, timers, master gatekeeper, etc. to communicate during the slalom. The radios need to be checked out, batteries checked out, radios handed out and tested at the race. Slalom Timers/Starter Three to Four people. If you like control – you’ll love this job. The starter sits at the beginning, makes sure the racers are in the start position, holds radios when the timers give the count-down and tells everyone over the radio that the racer has started. You also get to stop boat traffic on the river if s racer is on the course. The timers sit at the end and time each racer, start the racer on the course. MasterGater keeper gives you training and needed forms, etc. Safety These folks are in addition to the racers (who are always expected to assist swimmers). Slalom - They either have throw-ropes on shore or are in their boats to help swimmers. Other races as needed, downriver follows racers to provide any needed assistance. Slalom Judges You get to score the racers!! We give all the training necessary. Get for those who want to watch, but not race. Slalom Gate Hangers This job is so necessary, but hard work, that you get fed on your day of toil, plus overnight camping and the next day is a play day on the river. These folks are needed on the week before the Race (5/10) to span the gate ropes and do preliminary gate setting. Then on the day before and the day of the race we have to do final adjustments (changing water levels you know) and final placement of the gates. |

Water levels high this Year
Current
snowpack levels in most of New Mexico and Southern Colorado river
basins are way above average. When that snow starts to melt the rivers
may come up to levels not seen in New Mexico for 3, perhaps 10 years.
For exepcted river flow go to: AWC
encourages boaters to practice safe boating. Please make sure there are
enough experienced boaters in your group to help those who may have
difficulties. Dues statements were mailed
If
you have not received your dues statement (it's a postcard) please send
a note to flipline@comcast.net with your current address, it will be
forwarded to the database manager and the Treasurer so that we can
update your info.
